O my lover still my heart.
I was walking through the park.
I heard a song I heard your voice.

I followed the sound to the cottonwood trees,
where it played endlessly from a
silver radio inlaid with bone.

I knew I knew that you were there,
floating like a thread in air,
the song the voice the ghost inside,
the Silver Radio’s song.

O my lover I ran home.
I found the thief that stole the life,
behind your eyes, in your bones.

My hands tremble as I write
this letter for you tonight.
I leave you here as I retrieve your life.

I know I know that you are there,
floating like a thread in air,
the song the voice the ghost inside,
the Silver Radio’s song.

Fender Rhodes-Laura Phelan,

Packed up all your trunks, set your aging sails, you’re headed south.
Blaring trumpets, swirling lights, angel’s wings come out your mouth.
There are always other shores.
That’s what catching wind is for.

A voice like a trumpet,
sings a hollow tune behind me, now.

Stole a secret, hid your hands, set off to war.
A coiled rope, a silver knife, Sampson’s hair are on the floor.
You shore his sleeping head,
weakened strength you counted on.

silver tongue, silver knife blade.
silver voices flies like daggers, now.

You’re a thousand feet walking ‘round, world’s first marching band,
a semi-steady thunderclap won’t return, ‘til Jericho is in your hand.
After its walls are laid to waste,
you’ll find Jericho’s front door.

So your leaving, oh you don’t say,
in the middle of battle, now.

Some day we will find
our way this through this web of space and time
parting oceans black with night
revealing a path of light and stone.

Alleluia
Alleluia
Alleluia
Alleluia

Some day we will find
a place to rest our weary heads
strength to lift our faces
worn and heavy from our hands.

Alleluia
Alleluia
Alleluia
Alleluia

Some day we will find
the eternal golden thread
woven with God’s own hands
through forever and amen.

Alleluia
Alleluia
Alleluia
Alleluia

Spend a day with Charles Wallace and his sister too.
I wish I could be that telepathic with you.
Tonight, tonight, tonight I’ll keep on the light.
In this light my arms hold my resting head.

Telegraphs sent at the same time,
cross each other on the same line.

Like a voice from the middle of a mass of wings and eyes,
I wish I could sing like rain, a chorus, God’s sigh.
Tonight, tonight, tonight on our skin,
in our hands, our arms words we carry on and on.

Telegraphs sent at the same time,
cross each other on the same line.

Shed each skin with open doors and lost time.
I wish I could be in other voices, new songs.

Telegraphs sent at the same time,
cross each other on the same line.

All the colors won’t bring me down
not this time.
Tonight the lights are on my side
Every one.

Time’s a lover that will leave you
for someone else to shake from sand.

Tonight I’ll open my chest
and pull out the night.
Dance under its stars
With my love on my arm.

Time’s a lover that will leave you
for someone else to shake from sand.

Tonight the lights are on my side
oh every one.
Tonight the lights are on my side
oh every one.

Time’s a lover that will leave you
for someone else to shake from sand.

I imagine the sound, of hooves that shatter
the morning calm, the morning hour.
preceding the blur and the mane
outside my kitchen window.

My hands are one hundred years old.

I imagine the sun, as it’s reflected
there’s enough light to read a book on the ground.
All through the fields are night shadows,
black against gray against silver.

My hands are one hundred years old.
They were seventy-five the day I was born.

I imagine your voice swimming between,
your face and mine as I sleep on the bed.
Your breath and whisper mixed with night sounds
quietly proclaims “I think it’s time”.

My hands are one
My hands are one hundred years old.
They were seventy-five the day I was born.
My hands are one

Yes your heart will bleed,
When you lay it next to mine.
Uncover your chest
Honey you’re gonna be fine.

Beware
The attack of the
50 ft angry girl

Yes our love might bring
you down to your knees
just when you were thinking
you’d be swept off your feet.

Beware
Beare the reflections from
the slicked and shinned cool guy hair.

Yes I know our lives are Janus faced
but I yours I’m yours
from all its door ways.

Beware
Beware the knowing stare
from the faux nerd kids with their X-ray glasses

With a super hero cape
you wanted a great escape,
I just wanted a friend like you

Smoke in my pocket,
I’m not here.
Smoke in your hands
are you?

The sunset took your shadow
took the money and the race,
you just wanted to leave with out a trace

Smoke in my pocket,
I’m not here.
Smoke in your hands
are you?

Smoke in my pocket,
I’m not here.
Smoke in your hands
are you?

Guitars, Vocals, Fender Rhodes-Sean Craypo
Bass-Mario Gonzalez
Drums-Isaac Winburne

Lead me like you do
warm hands down my back
I’ve got you
till my body breaks.

Now that I’m speaking in tongues
and the holy ghost is back inside my chest
I will lay these burning lips
to you breast.

Lead me like you do
warm hands down my arm
I’ve got you
till my body wakes.

Now that I’m speaking in tongues
and the holy ghost is back inside my chest
I will lay these burning lips
to you breast.

Guitars, Vocals-Sean Craypo
Piano-Graham Reynolds

If you’ll slide another
 thorn inside my heart,
I will let your beauty
change my mind.

I will wait my bones dry,
if you’ll lie with me
lift my hands to your face
your closed eyes.

I’d crown with a summers day
if you’d only come outside
leave behind your paschal nights
your love your blood your time

Dream you dressed in white
with ribbon in your hair
dream your lips into a ship
I can sail away on.

I’d crown with a summers day
if you’d only come outside
leave behind your paschal nights
your love your blood your time

New time is always behind you
behind you behind you behind you
New time is always behind you
behind you behind you

I’d crown you with a summers day
only come outside
leave behind your paschal nights
your love your blood your time

your love your blood your time
is always behind you
behind you behind you

New time is always behind you
behind you behind you

Oh what did you find
hidden in your winter’s mind
a collapsing winter’s heart?

Oh what did you find
wrapped around your heart shaped mind
a woven heart shaped heart?

The lion is silent now
the mighty sound a far cry

Oh what did you find
stealing from your wondering mind
a broken and crooked heart?

The lion is silent now,
the mighty sound a far cry
from the shimmer you once knew
dulled and quiet through and through.

Oh what did you find
stealing from your heart shaped mind
a broken heart shaped heart?

The lion is silent now,
the mighty sound a far cry
from the shimmer you once knew
dulled and quiet through and through.

Fold these lights in your pocket
keep them bright and new.
Years from now you can claim them
maybe they will shine for you.

All the forgotten skylines
framed in your rearview.

Drag each day across your doorstep,
didn’t know they followed you.
Didn’t think you’d ever need them
Time might come when you do.

All the forgotten skylines
framed in your rearview.

I won’t be your star
I won’t be your dream
The cast net looked empty
The cast net looked empty
Gathered it threw it back

Follow the passing bell
peels and shimmers through the air.
Sneaks on you like thunder
born in still summer skies.

Guitars, Fender Phones-Vocals-Sean Craypo
Vibraphone-Mark Griffith
Contra-bassoon Ben Atherholt

Take a seat in the back of my head,
turn down the light, pull down the screen.
Tonight it looks like fiction again,
marvel at the pictures spun reel to reel.

Too much space is an insidious thing
but it give me time to write
letters to the parents of my dead friends.

It’s a marathon dream after dream,
some reruns and some I’ve never seen,
built up and dissolved, one by one.
Check the closing credits for your name.

Too much space is an insidious thing
it makes me wonder what the future might bring, but it
gives me time to write
letters to the parents of my dead friends.

All the names
a trail of letters all read the same
from key grip to bystander number one.
All that’s left is a stillness
a blank canvas waiting on you.

Too much space is an insidious thing
it makes me wonder what the future might bring, but it
gives me time to write letters to the parents of my dead friends.

An interview with myself

Me: First off why are you interviewing yourself?

Sean Craypo: Because no one else was going to do it. And also because I don’t like writing about myself in the third person. It seems strange.

Me: And this isn’t?

SC: Well…

Me: What is the meaning of ContraNova?

SC: The first part, Contra can mean against or sub, as in contrabassoon. The second part Nova can mean new or a star that suddenly gets brighter. It’s just a word I made up.

Me: Are you the only one in the band?

SC: Sort of. I write and arrange the songs. Then I get people to play on the recording. I do most of the singing and guitar playing. Although on the new record I play drums on the track ‘tonight the lights’. I also play some of the electric guitar and keyboards. But about 17 other people played on the album, so it’s not like it’s me recording everything by myself.

Me: Do members of any bands that I might’ve heard of play on your record?

SC: Yes! Members of Mother Falcon, Golden Arm Trio, The Stingers, SENO, 357 Lover, the Houston Symphony and a few other bands play on the record. Everybody who played on it is listed elsewhere on this website.

Me: There is a nine-year gap between your first album ‘infinity in all directions’ and your second one ‘silver tongue silver knife’. What took so long?

SC: I made the first one before I had kids. I made the second one after I had kids. That about sums it up.

Me: Your first album was a concept album with a story line involving time travel. Why?

SC: I’m kind of a sucker for time machines. Who doesn’t fantasize about going into the past and making things better or traveling to the future to see what happens? Time travel stories never quite make sense though. On the album ‘infinity in all directions’ the main character builds a time machine and sends himself 10 years into the past. Once he arrives he realizes that the time travel was made possible by an act of will on the universe’s part. Only his consciousness got send back to the past so there aren’t two of him running around. He realizes that he has no way to get back except to wait out the next 10 years and he realizes that the person he loves, Andeline, is 10 years away. He tries to do everything he can to make sure that he doesn’t change and miss out on connecting with her but when he finally meets her, he has changed and she doesn’t want him. So the album ends with him trying to figure out how he is going to get her back.

Me: Bummer.

SC: Sort of. He does eventually win her back. The very first song on ‘silver tongue silver knife’ finishes off their story. The narrator of that song is Andeline. She has been married to the unnamed narrator of ‘infinity in all directions’ for many years. She finds that her husband’s spirit has been captured by a magical silver radio she finds playing in the forrest. She tries to free to her husband by destroying the radio but dies in the attempt. But it’s actually kind of a happy ending because the silver radio is a benevolent magical silver radio and it captures the two lovers and turns them into a song that it plays forever and ever.

Me: That sounds convoluted.

SC: It is. But hopefully the songs are catchy enough that the listener won’t care.

Me: I think they are.

SC: That makes two of us. Or one of us actually.

Me: For someone new to your music where would you start them?

SC: from infinity in all directions I would start them with the track 'backwards clockwork'. I also think the track 'in disguise' is pretty catchy. It features a great trombone solo from Wayne Myers. My other favorite track from that record is 'same side of the day'. But that one is long and very slow so you have to be in the right mood to appreciate it.

From silver tongue silver knife I like ‘angels wings come out your mouth’ and ‘letters to the parents’. Many of my friends like the tracks ‘tonight the lights’ and ‘golden thread’.

Me: Do you have any hits?

SC: Not really. But for some reason the instrumental track ‘revolution 10’ (sound collage #1) from ‘infinity in all directions’ has thousands of more streams than any of the other tracks. Maybe it is because I’m not singing on it…

Me: How did you make that track?

SC: I looped together bits of songs and compositions I’ve made throughout the years.

Me: What’s next?

SC: I’m working on songs for a new album tentatively called ‘ain’t love grand’. I hope to have that one out and ready before nine years. I also want to work on instrumental album in the vain of ‘revolution 10’.

Me: Thank you.

SC: You’re welcome!
